Brightening Your Smile with Teeth Whitening Trays from Your Dentist

teeth whitening Colleyville, TX

Teeth whitening treatments performed by dentists are the fastest way to whiten teeth. They involve using bleaching agents like hydrogen peroxide to get rid of stains that have developed in the inner and outer layers of teeth.

Teeth whitening procedures are often performed using a customized mouth tray to dispense the whitening product. These trays are made from an impression of the patient's teeth so they fit tightly when worn. The mouth tray helps to keep the whitening solution, which contains harsh chemicals that can burn soft tissues, from seeping into the gums and other areas.

Dentists will typically evaluate their patient's oral health before proceeding with teeth whitening treatment. The products used can weaken enamel and it can lead to teeth sensitivity. People who have damaged or decayed teeth can end up causing more issues if they get teeth whitening treatments before fixing these problems.

The process

For many patients, teeth whitening starts with the dentist cleaning their teeth. This removes plaque and tartar that can end up blocking the whitening product from reaching some teeth surfaces. The dentist will likely perform the first tray treatment in office to allow for a demonstration to be done. They will fill up the teeth whitening tray with an even amount of the whitening product and inserts the tray in the patient's mouth. The person's bites down on the tray and keeps it in place for the next 60 to 90 minutes.

Once the patient's teeth have been soaked for the allotted time, the dentist will remove the mouth tray and rinse out the patient's mouth. If the patient is prone to having sensitive teeth, the dentist might perform a fluoride treatment to protect the patient's teeth. This is also done using a mouth tray that the patient bites down on for about 1 or 2 minutes.

Dentists will then provide the at-home teeth whitening trays for the patient to use on their own. The kits contain bleaching agents that are stronger than anything sold over-the-counter, but they are not as strong as the products used for in-office treatments. Typically, there are two to three weeks worth of teeth whitening treatment for the patient to use. Once they have finished their at-home whitening trays, the patient will likely return to their dentist for an evaluation.

Keeping teeth white

Teeth are constantly being discolored by a variety of things like decay, the tannins in the foods and beverages we consume, aging and smoking. Newly whitened teeth will eventually build up new stains and discoloration. However, patients can keep the results of their teeth whitening treatments for longer by practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding color-rich foods, using a whitening toothpaste twice a week and getting maintenance whitening treatments once or twice a year.
